Why Your Business Doesn't Show on Google Maps (and How to Fix It)

Seven real causes, and how to tell in ten minutes which one is yours.

📅 August 2026 ⏱ 9 min read Local SEO Google

If your business does not appear on Google Maps, it is almost always one of seven things: the profile is unverified, it has been suspended, the business type is not eligible, you are testing from the wrong place, a duplicate listing is splitting your signals, the category is wrong, or you are simply being outranked. These are different problems with different fixes, and the first job is working out which one you have rather than doing everything at once.

This guide gives you a ten-minute diagnosis, then the fix for each cause, with Google's own documentation cited so you are not relying on folklore. It is written for owners in Noida and Greater Noida, but the rules are the same everywhere.

Ten-minute diagnosis

Do these four checks in order before changing anything. Most people start fixing before they know what is wrong, and some of those fixes make things worse.

  1. Search your exact business name on Google. If the profile appears, it exists and is visible. Your problem is ranking, not existence, and that is section five below.
  2. Check the status in your Business Profile manager. Look for "pending verification", "suspended" or "needs review". This single screen explains most cases.
  3. Search your main service plus the area from a phone that is not signed in to your account, standing somewhere other than your premises. What you see from your own desk is not what customers see.
  4. Search your business name plus your phone number to find duplicates. Two listings for one business split your reviews and your signals.

Write down which of the four checks failed before reading on. The fix for a suspension is nothing like the fix for being outranked, and applying the wrong one costs weeks.

The seven causes and their fixes

CauseHow you recognise itThe fix
Not verifiedStatus shows pending or unverifiedComplete verification; use the method Google offers you rather than waiting for postcard
SuspendedProfile vanished, status says suspendedCorrect whatever broke the guidelines, then request reinstatement once, with evidence
Not eligibleOnline-only, P.O. Box, unstaffed virtual officeNo profile is possible; invest in search and ads instead
Testing from the wrong placeYou see it, customers do notTest signed out, away from your premises, or ask a customer
Duplicate listingTwo entries, reviews split between themReport the duplicate through the profile and ask for a merge
Wrong categoryYou appear for your name but never for your serviceSet the primary category to the single thing you most want to be found for
OutrankedYou appear, but below competitorsCompleteness, reviews, photos and proximity; see section five

A note on reinstatement

If you are suspended, resist the urge to file several appeals. Fix the underlying problem first, gather proof that you are a real business at that address, then appeal once. Repeated appeals without changes rarely help and slow the queue.

Are you even eligible?

This is the cause people spend months missing, and it is written plainly in Google's rules. To qualify for a Business Profile, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Brands, organisations, artists and other online-only businesses are not eligible.

Google also states that businesses with a P.O. Box address are not permitted, and that a virtual office is not eligible unless it is actually staffed and used during business hours. Rental or for-sale properties such as vacation homes, model homes and vacant apartments are ineligible, although sales and leasing offices can be verified. Businesses selling age-restricted products such as alcohol need a storefront.

If you are not eligible, stop trying. A purely online business in Greater Noida with no in-person contact anywhere will not get a profile, and attempts to force one through a friend's address are the single most common route to a permanent suspension. Put the effort into organic local search and paid ads instead.

The address question

A large share of Noida and Greater Noida businesses work from home and travel to customers. Google's guidance for that case is specific: if you do not serve customers at your business address, remove the address and enter only your service area. The profile then shows the service area rather than the address.

Hybrid businesses, which both serve customers at their premises and travel out, can show both. Choosing to hide the address when you are not a service-area business is against the guidance and is a common reason for later trouble.

Showing up is not the same as ranking

Once the profile is visible, the problem changes. Nobody outside Google knows the exact weighting, but the factors you can genuinely influence are not mysterious:

Expect this to take months rather than days, and expect it to compound. If you want the broader picture of ranking locally, our local SEO guide for Greater Noida covers the website side, and the Google Business Profile setup guide covers first-time setup step by step.

Mistakes that cause suspensions

Frequently asked questions

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

The usual causes are an unverified profile, a suspension, an ineligible business type, testing from your own premises so results differ from customers', a duplicate listing splitting your signals, a wrong category, or being outranked by better established competitors. Each has a different fix, so diagnose before you change anything.

Can an online-only business have a Google Business Profile?

No. Google's eligibility guidelines require in-person contact with customers during stated hours, and brands, organisations and other online-only businesses are excluded. If you have no in-person contact anywhere, your effort belongs in search and ads instead. Checked November 2026.

Can I use my home address or a virtual office?

A P.O. Box is not permitted, and a virtual office is not eligible unless actually staffed and used during business hours. If you work from home and travel to customers, Google's guidance is to remove the address and enter only your service area. Checked November 2026.

Should I hide my address on Google Business Profile?

Only if you are a service-area business that travels to customers and does not serve them at that address. Then Google says to hide it, and the profile shows only the service area. Hybrid businesses serving customers at their premises and travelling can show both. Checked November 2026.

How long does it take to appear on Google Maps after verification?

Appearing at all is usually quick once verification completes. Ranking well for competitive searches is slower and depends on category, distance from the searcher, reviews and profile completeness. Treat visibility and ranking as two separate problems.

Why can I see my listing but my customers cannot?

Because you are not a neutral searcher. Google personalises by location and history, and you are usually sitting at the business when you check. Test from a different part of Noida or Greater Noida on a phone not signed in to your account, or simply ask a customer what they see.
